  109. 1.  WHAT IS SNAGIT?
  110. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  112.   SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
  113.   to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
  114.   1991.  In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
  115.   SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
  116.  
  117.   SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an 
  118.   individual window or a user defined portion of the screen.  SnagIt 
  119.   also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
  120.   bitmap (BMP) file.  Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
  121.   printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.
  122.  
  123.   Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
  124.   as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
  125.   clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
  126.  
  127.   Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
  128.   it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
  129.   applications.  SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
  130.   NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.

  132. 1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
  133.  
  134.   Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
  135.   Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT.  To assist during this period,
  136.   TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack.  It includes a 16-bit
  137.   version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
  138.   for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
  139.   workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
  140.   version.  The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
  141.   switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
  142.   Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
  143.   penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.

  146. 2.  SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  147. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  149.   In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
  150.  
  151.   o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware 
  152.      requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.
  153.  
  154.   o  Microsoft Windows 3.1x, Windows For Workgroups 3.1x,
  155.      Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
  156.      system.
  157.  
  158.   o  A mouse or other pointing device
  159.  
  160.   o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  161.      bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  162.      printers that Windows supports.  Plotters are not recommended for
  163.      use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)

  165.   o  For e-mail output, a 32 bit MAPI mail client (e.g. Microsoft 
  166.      Exchange) must be installed and running

  189. 3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
  190.  
  191.   SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  192.   subsystems.  The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
  193.   you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
  194.   procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
  195.  
  196.   To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
  197.   Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  198.  
  199.   To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
  200.   the Help menu.

  202.   To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
  203.   select System Info from the Help menu.

  205.   When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will
  206.   disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration

  254. 5.1 32-bit Version - SnagIt/32
  255.  
  256.     o  SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit
  257.        MS Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither
  258.        MS Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been
  259.        configured).
  260.  
  261.     o  The captured cursor type is always the arrow cursor.
  262.  
  263.     o  One viewer (LView Pro 1.C/32) complains when loading a JPEG
  264.        file output by SnagIt.  The viewer says "premature end of JPEG
  265.        file" but will still view the file successfully.
  266.  
  267.     o  The Include Cursor option is not active for the Last Active
  268.        Window input selection.
  269.  
  270. 5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
  271.  
  272.     o  SnagIt does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail 
  273.        clients).
  274.  
  275.     o  SnagIt does not support JPEG or compressed BMP graphic file
  276.        formats.
  277.  
  278.     o  SnagIt does not support using the PrintScreen key to initiate
  279.        a capture.

  282. 6.  SETUP AND CONFIGURATION
  283. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

  285. 6.1 Installation Instructions
  286.  
  287.   The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  288.   application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  289.   NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  290.   automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  291.   appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  292.   the following steps:
  293.  
  294.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  295.  
  296.   2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  297.  
  298.   For Windows 95 users:
  299.  
  300.   3. From the Start menu, select Run
  301.  
  302.   For Windows 3.1x and Windows NT users:
  303.  
  304.   3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  305.      from the drop down menu.
  306.  
  307.   For all users:
  308.  
  309.   4. In the dialog box, enter:
  310.           a:\setup
  311.      (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than
  312.      the A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the 
  313.      command line above.)
  314.  
  315.   5. Click on the OK button.
  316.  
  317.   6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on
  318.      the Install button to install SnagIt.
  319.  
  320. 6.2  Uninstall Instructions
  321.  
  322.   If after installing SnagIt Twin Pack, you find it necessary to
  323.   remove the software from your computer, perform the following steps:
  324.  
  325.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows 3.1x and WFW 3.1x
  326.  
  327.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  328.  
  329.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt was
  330.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press
  331.      the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  332.  
  333.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt when Windows Starts" when
  334.      installing SnagIt, delete SnagIt from the Startup group.
  335.  
  336.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  337.      SnagIt icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  338.      you wish to delete the program item.
  339.  
  340.   4. Run File Manager and change to the directory in which you
  341.      installed SnagIt.  Delete the files SNAGIT.EXE and SNAGIT.HLP.
  342.  
  343.   Uninstall Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 95
  344.  
  345.   1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  346.  
  347.   For Windows 95 users:
  348.  
  349.   2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now 
  350.      configure your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced
  351.      button.
  352.  
  353.   3. Find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was installed. Click 
  354.      once on the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete
  355.      key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program item.
  356.  
  357.   4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  358.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  359.  
  360.      Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  361.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  362.      that you wish to delete the program item.
  363.  
  364.   5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory in which you
  365.      installed SnagIt/32. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and 
  366.      SnagIt32.HLP.
  367.  
  368.   For Windows NT users:
  369.  
  370.   2. In Program Manager, find the program group in which SnagIt/32 was
  371.      installed. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  372.      Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  373.      item.
  374.  
  375.   3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when
  376.      installing SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  377.  
  378.      In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  379.      SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm

  387. 7.  STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
  388. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  389.  
  390.   To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
  391.   group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
  392.   SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
  393.  
  394.   Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
  395.   it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt is
  396.   maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
  397.   format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
  398.  
  399.   You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
  400.   image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
  401.   convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
  402.  
  403.   If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  404.   installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
  405.   start Windows.
  406.  
  407. 7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
  408.  
  409.   When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
  410.  
  411.   o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
  412.      it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  413.  
  414.   o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt is
  415.      invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
  416.      printer for printing.
  417.  
  418.   o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt will capture the
  419.      image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can
  420.      print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
  421.      not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
  422.      format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
  423.      file.)
  424.  
  425.   o  Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt will output the
  426.      image at the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen.
  427.      This setting may result in a smaller printed image than you want;
  428.      to adjust the image size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help
  429.      file.
  430.  
  431.   Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
  432.   SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
  433.  
  434.   You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
  435.   of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
  436.  
  437. 7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  438.  
  439.   Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
  440.   ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
  441.  
  442.   The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  443.   When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
  444.   by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
  445.   output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
  446.   hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
  447.   file.
  448.  
  449. 7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
  450.  
  451.   You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
  452.   The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  453.  
  454.   Left Button     Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
  455.                   regions and windows to capture.
  456.  
  457.   Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
  458.                   it before you finish making the selection (that is,
  459.                   before you release the left mouse button).
  460.

  462. 8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  463. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  464.  
  465.   Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  466.  
  467.   Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
  468.   the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
  469.   further payment.  The single-user license cost is $39.95. 
  470.  
  471.   Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
  472.  
  473.   Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
  474.   of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
  475.   is shipped along with the multi-user license.  The 10-user license
  476.   cost is $200.00.
  477.  
  478.   SnagIt is most commonly registered by entering a software key in the
  479.   freely distributed evaluation version.  This immediately removes all
  480.   the registration reminder screens and software expiration dates.  If
  481.   the purchaser would like to receive a diskette there is a $4.95 
  482.   media charge in addition to the cost of the Single-User Twin Pack
  483.   license.

  485.   To Begin Registration:
  486.  
  487.   1.  Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
  488.  
  489.   2.  Select Begin Registration from the menu.
  490.  
  491.   3.  In the registration dialog box, enter the requested information
  492.       in the fields provided.
  493.  
  494.       NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
  495.             Your registered copy will be personalized for that name
  496.             ONLY.  You will NOT be able to change that name after you
  497.             have registered the software.
  498.  
  499.   4.  When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
  500.       called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
  501.       your registration and order form.  It includes a price sheet and
  502.       your Product ID number.
  503.  
  504.   5.  Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
  505.       allowing you to edit and or print the registration form.  While 
  506.       you are editing, please complete any blank items, including 
  507.       quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE 
  508.       PRODUCT ID NUMBER.
  509.  
  510.   6.  Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
  511.       Corporation by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon
  512.       receipt of your order, TechSmith will generate your
  513.       registration key. The key will then be sent to you by the method
  514.       of your choice, either e-mail, fax or postal delivery.
  515.  
  516.   To complete the registration process when you receive your key:
  517.  
  518.   7.  Select the Help menu.
  519.  
  520.   8.  Select Finish Registration from the menu.
  521.  
  522.   9.  Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the
  523.       field provided.
  524.  
  525.   10. Press OK.
  526.  
  527.   Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder
  528.   screens and software expiration dates will be removed.  If you have

  579. INSTALLING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
  580.  
  581. The SnagIt installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  582. application.  You must have Windows, Windows for Workgroups, Windows
  583. NT or Windows 95 installed prior to installing SnagIt.  Setup will
  584. automatically detect the version of Windows in use and copy the
  585. appropriate files during the install.  To install SnagIt, perform
  586. the following steps:
  587.  
  588. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  589.  
  590. 2. Insert the SnagIt Twin Pack diskette into a floppy drive.
  591.  
  592. For Windows 3.x and Windows 95 users:
  593.  
  594. 3. From the Start menu, select Run
  595.  
  596. For Windows NT users:
  597.  
  598. 3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run
  599.    from the drop down menu.
  600.  
  601. For all users:
  602.  
  603. 4. In the dialog box, enter:
  604.         a:\setup
  605.    (If you are installing SnagIt from a diskette drive other than the
  606.    A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the command
  607.    line above.)

  609. 5. Click on the OK button.

  611. 6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on the
  612.    Install button to install SnagIt.

  631. package copyrighted by TechSmith Corporation. SnagIt is not in the
  632. public domain. This program must be licensed if it is used beyond the
  633. 45-day evaluation period.  The files that comprise the SnagIt Twin
  634. Pack evaluation package, or the SnagIt archived file (SNAGIT30.ZIP),
  635. may be freely distributed or listed by software vendors so long as the
  636. software package and individual files are not modified.

  638. Disk Vendors, Shareware Distributors and BBSs may charge a nominal fee
