1. WHAT IS SNAGIT?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SnagIt has been providing Microsoft Windows users with an easy way
to capture and print Windows screens since it was first released in
1991. In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author Brian Livingston calls
SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows forgot."
SnagIt allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, an
individual window or a user defined portion of the screen. SnagIt
also accepts input directly from the Windows clipboard or a Windows
bitmap (BMP) file. Once captured, SnagIt will send the image to the
printer, the clipboard, a graphics file or to e-mail.
Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such
as word processors and desktop publishing programs from the Windows
clipboard or by importing the images from saved graphic files.
Software developers will find that SnagIt's full DDE support allows
it's functionality to easily be incorporated into other Windows
applications. SnagIt also provides MAPI support for Windows 95 and
NT, allowing captured images to be readily sent in an e-mail message.
1.1 What is the SnagIt Twin Pack?
Many organizations are in the early stages of the transition from
Windows 3.1x to Windows 95 or NT. To assist during this period,
TechSmith is offering the SnagIt Twin Pack. It includes a 16-bit
version, tailored for Windows 3.1x, as well as a true 32-bit version
for Windows 95 and NT. The setup program automatically detects the
workstation's operating environment and loads the appropriate
version. The purchaser is licensed to run either version and to
switch between them without further payment. Purchasing the Twin
Pack provides the benefits of running SnagIt today without the
penalty of Windows 95 or NT upgrade fees in the future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. SNAGIT TWIN PACK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In order to run SnagIt, your system must meet these specifications:
o An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware
requirements for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95 installed and configured on your
system.
o A mouse or other pointing device
o For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
printers that Windows supports. Plotters are not recommended for
use with SnagIt due to their inability to print bitmaps.)
o For e-mail output, a 32 bit MAPI mail client (e.g. Microsoft
Exchange) must be installed and running

3. GETTING HELP
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3.1 Using SnagIt's On-line Help
SnagIt's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
subsystems. The SnagIt Help file contains all of the information
you'll need to use SnagIt, except for the SnagIt installation
procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt.
To access SnagIt Help, select Help from the SnagIt menu bar, then
Help Index from the drop-down menu.
To get a quick overview of SnagIt essentials, select Quick Help from
the Help menu.
To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type,
select System Info from the Help menu.
When you register SnagIt, you will receive a software key that will
disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration
reminder screens.

5. KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 32-bit Version - SnagIt/32
o SnagIt/32 hangs on e-mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit

configured).

file" but will still view the file successfully.

Window input selection.
5.2 16-bit Version - SnagIt
o SnagIt does not support e-mail as an output (i.e. MAPI mail
clients).
o SnagIt does not support JPEG or compressed BMP graphic file
formats.
o SnagIt does not support using the PrintScreen key to initiate
a capture.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
7. STARTING AND USING SNAGIT
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To start SnagIt, double-click on the SnagIt icon in the Accessories
group. (If you specified a group other than Accessories during
SnagIt installation, look in that group for the SnagIt icon.)
Double-clicking on the SnagIt icon will execute SnagIt and bring
it to the foreground in its maximized form. When SnagIt is
maximized, you may change any of the setup options (input, output,
format, etc.) from the SnagIt menus.
You can also invoke SnagIt (that is, instruct SnagIt to capture an
image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more
convenient to minimize SnagIt before doing your screen captures.
If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
installation, SnagIt will start automatically the next time you
start Windows.
7.1 SnagIt Default Settings
When you install SnagIt, it uses the following default options:
o Input is set to Screen. This means that when SnagIt is invoked,
it will capture the entire Windows desktop.
o Output is set to Printer. This means that when SnagIt is
invoked, it will send the captured image to the Windows default
printer for printing.
o Format is set to Color. This means that SnagIt will capture the
image with the screen colors intact. (In most cases you can
print images using this format setting, even if your printer is
not a color printer. For additional information about SnagIt
format options, see the Format options topic in the SnagIt Help
file.)
o Scale is set to 1.00. This means that SnagIt will output the
image at the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen.
This setting may result in a smaller printed image than you want;
to adjust the image size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt Help
file.
Refer to the SnagIt Help file for additional information on setting
SnagIt's input, output, format and other options.
You can tell which settings SnagIt is using by looking at the bottom
of the SnagIt window when the program is maximized.
7.2 Invoking SnagIt with <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
Once you have SnagIt's parameters set as you want them, you are
ready to perform screen captures with SnagIt.
The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
When you press these keys, SnagIt will capture an image (determined
by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the
output device you selected. To invoke SnagIt using a different
hotkey combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt Help
file.
7.3 Using the Mouse to Select Images
You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt.
The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
Left Button Selects SnagIt menu options, and selects screen
regions and windows to capture.
Right Button Cancels a region or window selection, if you press
it before you finish making the selection (that is,
before you release the left mouse button).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
8. REGISTERING SNAGIT TWIN PACK
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Single-User SnagIt Twin Pack
Registration entitles the licensee to install either the 32 bit or
the 16 bit version of SnagIt and to switch between the two without
further payment. The single-user license cost is $39.95.
Multi-User SnagIt Twin Pack
Registration entitles the licensed organization to install 10 copies
of SnagIt, in any combination of 16 bit and 32 bit. A single diskette
is shipped along with the multi-user license. The 10-user license
cost is $200.00.
SnagIt is most commonly registered by entering a software key in the
freely distributed evaluation version. This immediately removes all
the registration reminder screens and software expiration dates. If
the purchaser would like to receive a diskette there is a $4.95
media charge in addition to the cost of the Single-User Twin Pack
license.
To Begin Registration:
1. Select the SnagIt program's Help menu.
2. Select Begin Registration from the menu.
3. In the registration dialog box, enter the requested information
in the fields provided.
NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register.
Your registered copy will be personalized for that name
ONLY. You will NOT be able to change that name after you
have registered the software.
4. When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file
called REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt default directory. This is
your registration and order form. It includes a price sheet and
your Product ID number.
5. Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically,
allowing you to edit and or print the registration form. While
you are editing, please complete any blank items, including
quantities, totals, and payment information. DO NOT EDIT THE
PRODUCT ID NUMBER.
6. Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith
Corporation by any of the methods described on the form. Upon
